Bloodthirsty creatures await a pack of divers who become trapped in an underwater cave network.
Decades after a rock church in communist Romania's Carpathians caved when an expedition caused a landslide and buried everyone, Dr. Nicolai's scientific team exploring the associated Templar Knights monster fighting-legend discovers a deep, flooded cave system and hires the brothers Jack and Tyler's brilliant divers team to explore it. Another explosion traps them, after finding a mysterious parasite turning all species carnivore, and later an independently evolved predator species. Jack may be infected and turning, but Tyler sticks with him, so the group splits, hunted by the monsters, which also fly.
This movie is simply very boring, just to start. The creatures are very cool and well-designed, but you almost never get to see them! Poor Patrick Tatopolous was the creature designer for this film, and he must feel so bad that his creatures were shown so little during the movie. I admire Tatopolous for his creature design in films like &#39;Silent Hill&#39; and &#39;Godzilla,&#39; though, so he won&#39;t go down in my negative book. <br/><br/>The film is about a bunch of cave divers…uh…diving for treasure (or something like that…) when they stumble upon a living hell with monstrous winged creatures and, oh no, giant naked mole rats (not really, but it sure does look like it). None of the film is suspenseful one bit, nor scary. The words on the back of the DVD ( which I…bought) say that the movie is &quot;Taking terror to a whole new level.&quot; Indeed they are, but that level isn&#39;t up, it&#39;s down. Way down.<br/><br/>Another downer is that the characters that you don&#39;t like LIVE and the characters that you like DIE (examples Charlie and the Japanese photographer). I did not like the main character at all (played by Cole Hauser), I thought he was very unlikable. Charlie was the one who should have lived. I also particularly did not like the English woman (Lena Headey), and yet, she lived, and turned out to be a demon-creature thing at the end (which was a nice ending, though). <br/><br/>If you really, truly want to see it, don&#39;t make my foolish decision to buy it. Erase this movie from your mind. You don&#39;t *really* want to see it. <br/><br/>3 dead spelunkers out of 10.
I honestly cannot think of a movie worse than this…no matter how hard i try nothing comes to mind. Sure people will bash Battlefield Earth and other such movies, but at least they had their points; the humor, the overall message, something could be said for each and every movie most people bash. But not this one, o no. There was no point, no reasoning, no explanations, and no acting! Let me explain.<br/><br/>The movie starts 30 years ago, with several men, who just got out of jail (and they never explain why they were in jail), trying to find a cave. They find said cave, which is supposed to have some uber cool treasure, but they all get trapped inside. 30 years later, one of the world&#39;s premier underwater mapping teams takes the job to go explore said cave. They never really give a solid reason as to why, just that they got the funding for it, so their going to do it. Jump forward, their in the cave, and people are starting to get hurt/eaten/die mysteriously. So their trying to get out, and pretty much everyone gets killed. The main character gets slashed early on and starts &quot;slowly becoming one of them&quot;, yet managing to stay human THE WHOLE MOVIE. However, one of his little buddies gets killed and 5 minutes later a monster with the same tattoo comes out of nowhere to give them hell. Really this movie is a sad waste of money and time, and anyone who gives it a rating other than 1 has absolutely no taste.
The writers supply character traits that seem to point toward a pay-off but never reach one. People all end up as tight-lipped, indistinguishable automatons who plummet 50 feet down jagged rocks with scarcely a scratch.
Two archeologists—Doctors Nicolai (<a href="/name/nm0411903/">Marcel Iures</a>) and Kathryn Jannings (<a href="/name/nm0372176/">Lena Headey</a>)—assemble a team to investigate a huge cave system deep within the Carpathian Mountains of Romania that they think might contain an unexplored ecosystem. American cave-diving brothers Jack (<a href="/name/nm0369513/">Cole Hauser</a>) and Tyler (<a href="/name/nm0004827/">Eddie Cibrian</a>) McAllister, survivalist Top Buchanan (<a href="/name/nm0004820/">Morris Chestnut</a>), cameraman Alex Kim (<a href="/name/nm0196654/">Daniel Dae Kim</a>), rock-climber Charlie (<a href="/name/nm0005305/">Piper Perabo</a>), sonar expert Strode (<a href="/name/nm0201061/">Kieran Darcy-Smith</a>), and first scout Briggs (<a href="/name/nm0712262/">Rick Ravanello</a>) eventually descend into the cave together. When Strode&#39;s water scooter explodes, the entrance to the caverns caves in, and the explorers must find another way out. Along the way, they stumble across scattered equipment and the remains of previous explorers and soon come to realize that they are being stalked by unknown, but highly vicious, creatures. The Cave is based on a screenplay written by Michael Steinberg and Tegan West. Actually, the cave has been known about for many years. The Knights Templar built an abbey over it in the 13th century to seal the entrance as a display of &quot;God&#39;s protective power,&quot; and a group of explorers unearthed the cavern 30 years earlier when they tried to blast their way into the system, causing a landslide that buried the abbey and trapped them in the cave, never to be seen again. Nicolai and Kathryn, while excavating the ruins of the abbey, rediscover the cave entrance. The V.S.S.F. tattoo stands for &quot;Verband Schweizerischer Sprengfachleute&quot; or &quot;Swiss Society of Explosive Engineers&quot;. Strode is the first to be carried off by one of creatures, followed by Nicolai. Charlie is gutted when she attempts to climb to a hole in the cave ceiling and is attacked by a flying creature. Briggs is hauled up the side of a cliff by a creature, and Alex is eaten by one. Jack is killed when he leaps on a flying creature, and an explosion causes the cave walls to start collapsing. Tyler, Top, and Kathryn make it to the surface. Tyler, Top, and Kathryn get out of the cave by following a stream of cold water to where it merges with a river on the surface. Some days later, Tyler joins Kathryn at a table at a sidewalk cafe. He asks Kathryn whether Jack might have survived outside. Kathryn admits that, at first she thought the parasite couldn&#39;t survive outside the cave environment, but now she&#39;s not so sure. She leans forward, kisses his cheek, and peers at him over the tops of her sunglasses. &quot;I think it wants to get out,&quot; she says, showing that her eyes have begun to mutate the same way that Jack&#39;s eyes did. She then gets up and hurries off into the crowd. In the final scene, Tyler tries to follow her, but Kathryn has disappeared. The Cave is most often compared to three other movies—<a href="/title/tt0451262/">Within (2005)</a> (2005) (aka The Cavern), The <a href="/title/tt0435625/">The Descent (2005)</a> (2005), and the sequel <a href="/title/tt1073105/">The Descent: Part 2 (2009)</a> (2009). All four movies have similar plots and are shot in a manner provoking the greatest amount of claustrophobia.
